THE BANYAN TREE- A LANDMARK IN HUFTSDORP- THAT SHELTERED MANY A LEGAL EAGLE By HEMANTHA SITUGE

The gigantic banyan tree [ Ficus bengalensis] a landmark that was the ripples of concern and center of controversy found in the old Supreme Court premises-present premises of the High Courts-is the only tangible legal heritage- undoubtedly etched in gold in the days of yester year in the bi centenary of the legal profession.

The recent move to axe this tree and efface this hallmark of the profession was vehemently opposed by the legal fraternity.

The CLS has embarked in a soul searching exercise to protect this monument for posterity.

Some eco friendly CLS enthusiasts spearheaded by Gamin Alwis Vice President CLS ,Binara Gunasekara President CLS have launched a shramadana campaign cleared up the landscape moved the courts productions to a safety yard dumped the other refuse from the precincts .

The CLS has paid its profuse sense of gratitude for this' living monument 'for the continued services rendered to the profession and society of litigants at large
